A grandfather who is also interested in IT and spending a few hours
on the Internet. Currently, I am focusing my time on enhancing my skills
on digital video editing and burning the movies into DVDs that not only
can play on the computer but also on any standard DVD players. Knowledge,
like learning
space of a child,
has no boundary.
IT for Seniors web site is for the young and old who wish to take this
site as a forum to share IT (Information Technology) skills.
Many of us in our fifties and older may not have the opportunities to
use the computer the way our younger generations have. For example,
your children or grandchildren will have learnt to use the computers
during their school days.
For lack of knowledge or confidence, we are afraid to use our children's
computers - afraid to spoil the computers or mess up the data in the
computers.
Solutions are now available; especially for those who have retired and
can find time to learn a new skill. There are courses and IT Workshops
available for seniors who wish to learn how to use the computer to surf
the Internet and sending/receiving electronic mails (emails) to/from
friends and love ones. For those who already know the basic of using
the computer may want to venture into other computer skills like blogging,
web design & publishing, e-learning, etc.
Currently I am helping out, as a volunteer, in Henderson Community Club
and the course topics include the following:
1) What is in a computer? How to use the mouse, the keyboard and even
how to switch OFF the computer properly.
2) How to surf the Internet? Using the Search Engine, the Internet Web
address, etc.
3) How to send/receive electronic mails (emails) from friends and love
ones including preparing properly sized pictures (or images) suitable
as an attachment to the email.
4) You
can also use the computer to write and print Chinese.
5) How to use Microsoft Word programme to prepare a document, to write
a letter, etc.
The above is the basic computer skills for seniors. More challenging
IT skills like web publishing, PowerPoint Presentations, movie editing
and burning into DVDs, photo slide presentation, blogging, wireless
and cable networking, etc. can be considered if the need arises..
